Step 1: Qualification

Generate new leads and automate your process with design packages

Setting up a qualification process is one of those things that doesn't seem all that important when you're first starting your business, but trying to get one in place when your phone is ringing off the hook and you can barely sit down because you're way too busy, feels next to impossible.

No matter where you are in your business, step one of the Mydoma Method is pretty easy to do. You'll need:

  • A way for potential clients to find out more about the services you offer (website, social media, word-of-mouth, ads, etc.)

  • A way to gather information about potential clients and their projects as efficiently as possible (discovery call and initial questionnaire)

  • A way to quickly decide whether that project is suited for your business

With Mydoma, you can embed design packages on your website that generate new client interest, automate the discovery call process, and streamline the way you schedule and follow up with new clients. (We recommend you start with a Discovery Call package and an Initial Consultation package.)

What to Include in a Discover Call Package

We recommend setting up a package for your discovery calls. Whether you publish the package on your website or keep it as a private link, a discovery call package will allow your clients to:

  • Book a time for the call (optional)

  • Fill out a questionnaire (optional)

  • View your Client Welcome Packet (optional)

  • Communicate with you in your studio message center

and they can do it all in one convenient, easy-to-find place.

Setting up a discovery call package for your potential new clients helps cut down on your admin timeyou only have to set it up once rather than having the normal back-and-forth emails with every new client.

When you are building your Discovery Call package, we recommend that you include:

A cover image--for example:

A description that explains that this is the first step in your process as well as why discovery calls are beneficial:

A post-purchase description of what potential clients need to do before their call and what they can expect during this call:

An appointment link so the potential client can book the call:

An initial questionnaire so you can get the answers to some of your questions before the call:

Welcome information in the Files & Media:

The Welcome Packet is generally a PDF that explains your process and gives information about your business:

A Welcome Video is a great way to give your potential client a warm welcome, encourage them to fill out the questionnaire before they book their call, and let them know (again) what to expect:

What to Ask During the Discovery Call

The discovery call itself is your opportunity to understand the basics of the potential clients' project and get a sense of whether they have realistic budgets and timelines, respect your expertise, and will communicate effectively.

The goal of this call is to:

  • Discover the client's goals, vision, and expectations for the interior design project

  • Find out logistics like the timeline, decision makers involved, and budget

  • Explain your process and capabilities so the client knows how you would approach bringing their vision to life.

  • Determine if the project aligns with your specialty, availability, etc.

Some example questions are:

  1. How did you find out about me?

  2. Where is the project located?

  3. Tell me about the project. (What’s the scope?)

  4. Do you have a budget in mind?

  5. Where are you in the process?

  6. Are you working with an architect?

  7. Have you selected a contractor?

  8. What’s most important to you? Price? Timeline? Or Quality?

  9. Have you ever worked with a designer before? How was that experience?

  10. Are there any styles that have caught your eye?

If you decide that the potential client and their project look like they will be a good fit, make sure to let them know what to expect during the initial consultation--signing contracts, collecting deposits, touring the physical site, or anything else to officially kick off the project.

The Initial Consultation is a big part of Step 2: Intake.
